Nanton to Chain Lakes

I took a drive yesterday to check out the leg from Nanton to Chain Lakes - yikes!  It was 38km.  The first 20 km is almost all uphill and the remainder was up and down.  Shawna, the other half of my team, and I are planning to do a training ride from Nanton to Chain Lakes -  return, sometime in the middle of may.  If you are interested in joining us, let me know.  It would be great to meet other riders.  We also do regular training rides around the Olds area, so anyone is looking to ride around there, let us know!

I would love to do some training rides, Nanton to Chain Lakes, let me know when and where ... hopefully not too early in the am ... not a morning person...lol... but come May I am suppose to start hills so I am thinking that the middle of May is the soonest that I should be trying to tackle that much hill... Knee injury if you were wondering.
My name is Tammy and my email is tlcann@hotmail.com if you would like to reach me.

I wouldn't mind doing that ride a couple of time before the event.  It'll probably be good to be familiar with the hardest leg of the ride.  Maybe a fairly big group could go ride in May, and maybe in June as well...

We plan to do the Nanton - Chain Lakes (return) ride on May 16th. There is a convenince store on the west side of highway 2 southbound at about 20th street. I am pretty sure it is a WINKS. We can start from there at about 10:30am. See you then! The more the merrier!

I'm going to have to bail out on this training ride.  I managed to injure myself on a ride this weekend, and need some time to rehab.  Good luck everyone!

Two of us rode this on Saturday May 15.  We left Calgary at about 8:15.  Parked just west of Nanton.  If you are driving to Nanton just to do this ride I would continue on and park just before you go left on 533.  The ride between Nanton and the turn off has no shoulder and can be busy.  Once you turn and continue on 533 it gets wider and a little more comfortable.

Total KM 76.8
Total Time 3:08
short Rest at the campground.  (note the snack bar was not open when we arrived even though the time table on the door indicated that it would be)

The climb going toward Chain Lakes has its steep parts but is "stepped" a little climb, a little flat etc..

At the top of one of the climbs you will be greeted by a Canadian flag and a very curious Lama.  Look for it.

The decents are long and fun, watch out for cross winds.

The ride back seemed much quicker.

If this is a check out ride for you, make sure that your brakes are tuned or don't use any like my ride partner.  Also remember that your ride is not supported so bring your normal road ride gear.  I flatted 15 feet from the car on the way out.  I imagine that there is little cell coverage over the pass however I did not check.  I had no coverage at the camground.(Bell)

On our way back we ran in to some other riders heading out.  If you are the ones who post here, please tell me what your experience was like.

Have fun and be safe.....

Bikes - Jamis Comp Extreme and a Pinarelo Dogma guess which one was faster??

NB

PS one other key learning was that it may not be a good idea to disappear for 4 hours on your anniversary.  Gotta go get my shovel and start digging my way out of this one....

Last note, great burgers in Nanton at the little place on the left just past the air museum!

OK last last note.  I finally convinced the Garmin to give up the total Ascent/Descent and it was 1027m up and 1030m down, not sure where the extra three came from on the downside but there it is.

I won't be able to join the group tomorrow. With the predicted heat and the distance being long for me, I have evaluated to do a lesser 40km trek early in the morning in the Drumheller Valley. I was looking forward to it, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Have a great ride! Thanks for your review Nigel!

Nigel,

Thank you for your excellent review!  And no that was not a good idea to disappear for any time on your anniversary!  Please say hi and happy anniversary to the wonderfully patient Mrs. Nigel!!!  I will let you know how tommorrows ride goes.  I got a new bike but I forgot to buy tubes .. fingers crossed!!!
Oh by the way this bike does not weight a ton ...lol... I bought a Sirrus... specialized...27 speed in a very pretty black with white writing...

Is anyone heading out to do the Nanton to Chain lakes ride on Saturday June 5th, if so I would like to join you. I am part of a company team out of Edmonton so I do not have ride partners down here.

I am a newbee but have worked on 50 km rides to get ready and am looking at extending my ride.

I was thinking of leaving around 9 but can change my schedule to fit.

my email address is jcampbell@chamco.com

Hey Hawki, John's post was from last year...folks were trying to get a feel for what ended up being the toughest portion of last year's ride.

Keep your eyes open, though...as we lose the snow, more and more training rides will pop up on the board :)

Hi Hawki05 and Psycho Mike I did get a feel for that set of hills, more than I realy wanted. The team I am on this year is Chamco South if you are looking for a team please sign up with us. We will be doing some training rides both the sponsered and free rides as soon as the weather cooperates. The Nanton ride will be in the beginning of June as I would like the snow gone and my body in as good a shape as possable. John

John, I hear you on those hills.  I still shake my head when I look at the elevation plot my GPS gave me.  I was sure glad I re-geared my cyclocross bike to have a drive gear (30-32 instead of the stock 30-25).

This year, though, I should be ready for anything....I'm bringing the mountain bike ;)  I won't be the fastest, but the hills won't be the same issue with a granny gear available ;)
