As a N.A.I.T. Certified Personal Trainer in the Edmonton area, I suggest that riders start training ASAP. This is going to be fun, but long and tough ride. Prepare your body as best as you can, so you can pull through this epic ride
I was advised that I should be doing some weigth training in addition to aerobics. Would you agree? If so, what proportion? I hate stationary bikes so am training on elliptical. Hopefully the roads will be dry by the end of February.
Yes, you should be doing weights. They should be done with the bike training. What to do and how much to do is hard to say, as you should build up and work towards peaking at the race time. I suggest consulting a trainer to sit down and talk what to do. Other than that, all I can say is a basic 12 reps and 3 sets setup to start.
Before the recent bout of bad weather I rode the paths twice. The worst part was getting to them the roads are still pretty bad. Once you were on them they were pretty dry. Some were even plowed. I rode 30 k and only found it really icy around the zoo.
Muscles aside, what do you suggest for Cardio building? Weights won't help that.

Make sure to mix up your rides ; even if it is on a stationary bike. Once a week a long cycle, steady pace shorter rides, and short rides where you do some intervals. Intervals are when you pick up the pace for 30sec to 2 minutes; followed by an equal (longer if needed) length of time with easier spinning. Make sure you are warmed up first. Intervals challenge your cardio and improvements come quickly. Caution...you need to have a bit of a training base first. (Hills challenge the cardio system big time...whether you cycle them, jog, or walk)
The harder you work out,.... the harder you need to rest!
How about walking stairs, jogging, swimming, basketball ? Cross training is good!

Hey Coach - regarding the weight training, should they be light weights just to tone or heavier weights. I am considering weight training but thought I should do light weights just to tone.
