Hi there! I am going to buy some clip shoes today and wonder if anyone has advice on a reasonably priced pair of shoes that will be, at minimum, acceptable for the ride?
I bought mountain bike shoes at MEC for under $100. They are my first pair of clip shoes, they are easier to walk in and I haven't had any issues with them not staying clipped. They are however heavier that road bike shoes, but for me I'm not planning on racing with them anyways.
The biggest thing is what fits your feet and your budget. MEC has a good assortment and some of the bike shops have deals too (mention you're doing the ride and many will take a discount off the regular price).
It's hard to recommend a shoe without knowing what/how you ride and so on. I've had good luck with both Louis Garneau and Specialized mountain biking shoes, but then again, I'm more of a mountain and cyclocross type of rider (more off road than on).
Check out what is available locally for you and in you budget and then try them on and see how they fit your feet. You will notice they are typically a lot stiffer a sole than a normal shoe.
