MTN or Road bike

Hey everyone,  This is my first major bike ride and would like to know if any one could suggest  riding a mtn bike with road tires or getting a road bike?  My budget will not allow me to buy decent bike, maybe in the future. I thought maybe buying an used one ,renting one or maybe borrowing a bike from someone who has an extra one?  I would appreciate any feedback. Thanksconfuse

Well, it can be done on both (I've done a 200+ km road ride on a mtb in a single sitting), but a road bike will be easier overall. Our ride does have a fair bit of hills (they are called foothills, after all) so some people keep the mtb for the lower gearing.

If you have a bike already, it's probably usable. We've had folks on bmx bikes, old cruiser, trikes, tandems, recumbent bikes, single speed bikes....pretty much anything you can think of.

Once you decide what works for you in terms of fit and riding style, folks here can give you pointers on how to get it set up for the Ride :)

Hawki,

If it helps you any, I did a 200+km road ride (in one day) on this bike fitted with some decent slicks:

Although I've done the Ride the last couple years on a cyclocross bike (think of a road bike made beefy for "nice" off-road racing), this year I'll be doing the Ride on a mountain bike. This is the frame I intend to ride this year:
