I've been asked by one of my donations what the breakdown of the fund raising is. I.e. what percentage goes towards staff salary, cost of t-shirts, web maintenance etc. vs. how much actually goes to cancer research. Does anyone know where I could get this information?
If I remember correctly, our $75 entry fee covered the Ride costs (other than the "stuff" that has been donated, like food, and all the support given by volunteers), so the donations all go to the Alberta Cancer Foundation. I don't know what their break-down is, but either the Ride office or the Foundation should be able to get you the info.

I did some checking and 100% of the funds raised go to the Cancer Foundation. All other costs of administering the ride are covered by volunteers, sponsors, etc. We ride to Conquer Cancer, not administrative budgets. Ride on folks, & keep the wind at your back. Don't foget to smile, it keeps the bugs out of your mouth.
Yes 100% of funds go to the Alberta Cancer Foundation however they are also the ones paying the organizers (Cause Force). At the end of the day it costs money to raise money. Thus, the more money is raised the lower the cost to raise a dollar. At the end of the day the Alberta Cancer Foundation should realize a healthy 55-65% return. This would be similar to the return they get with the weekend to end breast cancer. Their largest expense will be advertising.
Note: It is getting harder and harder for charities to run special events for free. For example the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life does a phenomenal job of keeping costs down and with EVERYTHING counted they have a return rate of 75%. Very few companies are able to give food, product and money away especially in the quantities required to support 1,000+ cyclists. As a result charities depend on us the participants to raise as much money as possible to make these EPIC events worthwhile.
Hopefully this helps answers some questions and concerns...
P.S. I am not affiliated with the Alberta Cancer Board. I've worked for non-profits for over 10 years and have a good understanding of the challenges they face especially with special events.
