Hello all you crazy bikers out there, maybe I should clarify, I meant "cyclists". I'm looking for Ride to Conquer Cancer participants in the St. Albert area who might be intersted in creating a team to ride together, train together, fundraise together and help each other in all the above. If interested, please contact Dale @ afewspokesshort@shaw.ca or post on this buliten board and hopefully I will see it with out you waiting for to long. Thanks, Dale
Abrokenshire is in the northwest of Edmonton....pretty close to St. Albert. I get out that way on rides too... You're always welcome to join in with us We definitely qualify as crazy cyclists

Thank you, for your offer, I would be honored. I don't have a road bike yet and I'm still not in the greatest shape, so I hope that your group isn't into "High Speed Runs". I try to commute to work and I average about 18k with my knobby tires on it's about a 10k ride. Please let me know when you are out and about, I would like to come for a ride with you all. Thanks Dale
No worries. I'm more of a dirt rider myself....a cyclocross bike is as close as I get to "high speed runs." I know ABS is working on improving, but she's not into high performance road riding / racing either ;) We're a laid back, crazy group...possibly even crazy enough to pull off the medieval theme we're going with :)
I'll be out and about this Saturday. Perhaps we can meet up with Abrokenshire and go for a small group ride? ABS, if you're reading this thread, maybe you can chime in and let us know if it's a possibility on your end?
Sounds great, Dale. If you're interested, my signature has a link to our team page. Feel free to have a little gander at it and the personal pages for myself and ABS.
Hey guys, Yeah for the power of 3. I'm more than willing to join you for a ride Dale & may I express a warm crazy welcome. Mike & I are pretty easy to get along with, so don't worry about being in "shape". My personal philosophy is round is a perfectly good shape. I'm still working on conditioning with my trainers so am willing to pass on any tips. I am only a few minutes away from St Albert & am willing to come to you as well. I'm sure we can find a middle ground for all of us though & would love to meet you. Climb on board the medieval wagon man!! All Knights & Damsels encouraged to come play with us.
Annette

Dale, if you do want to join up with us, just give the Ride office a call....let 'em know you'd like to join the team (there is no password) and they'll take care of that for you.
Man, I sure hope this weather holds all week like they say it should. I went out for a quick spin on Sat. night (night riding can be a lot of fun, btw) and it was beautiful out.
Hey guys, anyone up for a ride this weekend? I'm doing "Conditioning" training with my trainer tomorrow & could probably use a ride to work some of the kinks out. Let me know if you're interested.
I would be up for it. My wife is out of town for the next few days so i will have to talk one of my girls into watching their brother, that shouldn't be to hard. what did you have in mind? I'll try and keep up. let me know. Dale
I may be game....it would have to be Saturday for me...morning would be better. I just got done "franken-biking" the cross bike with a 12-32 cassette and mountain rear derailleur and I wouldn't mind giving it a shake-down ride.
Check out the TEAM !! Yes I might be game as well. I would need to go at about 10 or 10:30 am for a couple hours would be good. Have some commitments outside of that. Let me know.
hi mike, very sorry but by the time i got home all my plans changed, both my girls are busy tomorrow morning so I'm out. Sunday morning could be a possibility but it sounds like you guys are busy. So I may just venture out on my own for a bit. The +1 as you say is my little sister and I talked to her before adding her so yes we have 4. good start, now if we can multiply that by 10 we'll be rockin'. Sorry about the ride tomorrow, it's tough most days, even worse when my wife is not here. Later Dale
Wow! The team grows Yippee!! I forgot I have assignments to mark on Saturday Mike so can't make that one, but hubby & I are planning to hit the river valley on Sunday. Anyone up for joining us? No worries we take it slow & easy, & enjoy the scenery when hubby comes. He has a bum knee so no power riding. Great for working the kinks out though. Morning is when we usually go. Let me know.
No prob...I'll hit the trails and see how well the new gearing does on the hills :)
Btw, as another helper for the fund raising/awareness: if you'd like, I'd be willing to do up some business cards. I still had the template from last year and I've modified it to include the team name and shield. It actually looks pretty slick, I just need to track down our card stock to make them a little less flimsy (I'm using a heavy weight letterhead right now)....oh...speak of the devil...just spotted the card stock here in our home office ;)
Well, the gearing is great....definitely a good move. Didn't lose any speed, but I climbed a hill that has been a nemesis of mine (MUT hill...fairly short, quite steep and covered in gravel). Managed it just fine this time...usually I either spin out (too low a gear on the mtb) or I bog down (to high a gear) but the ratios on the CX bike were perfect for it. I figure that mean they'll be perfect for "sit and spin" riding up those long hills next year (if they keep the same route).
Only negative is that I failed my freehub too :( It's toasted, nuked, gone....RIP :( I limped the bike home, but it was a unique experience. Oh well....stuff happens when you're a bigger guy and can put down a wee bit of power ;) I'll take the wheel back to the shop where I got the bike this spring and see what they can do with it. I figure they'll get the hub covered under warranty, but I may just use that towards a wheel rebuild with a mountain bike hub, if they think it'll fit the frame of the bike.
My deepest condolences on the loss of your freehub Mike. If you feel flowers would be appropriate let me know. Business cards would be a great idea. If you want to send me the template by email I have cardstock that I can print here too.
How is next weekend looking for the team? Any plans? Would anyone be interested in a team meeting for meet & greet of our new teammates, some brainstorming for fundraising (although Dale is doing fab ), &/or a ride. I'm open to either day that works for everyone & am willing to offer my place for dinner/BarBQ/coffee/etc. I have more assignments to mark next weekend so can only do 1 day or the other, but am flexible (at least that's what my trainers keep telling me ).
Funny you should put it that way, ABS....the flowers may be needed, but not for the hub :(
Provided the hub is back up and running by next weekend (should be..at least that is what the shop told me), then I'm game for Saturday. I'll bring cards (I've got a wonderful color laser printer/scanner/copier here) and we can compare notes, toss around some ideas (great one with the cookbook, btw) and get to know each other.
Saturday sounds good to me & I'll keep it open. Let me know a time & if you want my place or not. I'll phone later this week to confirm. Oh Oh! Why do you need the flowers?

Cool about Saturday. I'll let you know...I volunteered for the "School of Cross" but we may not be covering if if there weren't additional volunteers. If so, the day is available (hopefully the longer distance bike will be too...I should find out tomorrow).
The flowers would be passed along to the family of a friend who passed this weekend...complications of Muscular Dystrophy :(
Oh!!! By the way, we have a Facebook group :) I set it up earlier but forgot to mention it. I am not sure how you need to search for it, but it is officially:
Cancer Crusaders - 2010 Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer Team
Dale and Ardeanna, I see you've already found it. If you have thoughts on the jersey, please let me know. To offset the cost of the jersey and possibly get some additional donations, I figure we could sell some sponsorship space. Let me know what you think ;)
Can I say that I *(&^%$&'n Love your idea for a jersey. The idea to sell space to offset the cost is all so awsome. I don't think I know you Mike, but we must be some how connected because I swear some of the ideas your tossing out, it's like there's ESP or something going on. Hope to see you and ABS on Saturday. Dale
hehehe...I've received a lot of positive response to the preliminary jersey design at this point. I am on a couple mtb discussion boards and all that have commented have been very favorable.
I also have "business cards" for eveyone....hopefully this weekend I can get them to you (at least Dale and ABS....I figure you've got the better chance of meeting up with Ardeanna, Dale). :)
That sounds great. I was also going to ask if you have a MFG choosen for the Jerseys? I have ordered Jerseys once in the past and I know that generaly they need about 6 months to pull off something like that. We may have to move quickly to get what we want. Hope to see everyone on Saturday. Ardeanna or Deanna (is what we call her) may be coming with me to Leduc on Saturday. Later Dale

Well, I'm checking with the locals who do sportswear, but I also have a couple contacts in the US. Other than the headaches with shipping etc. from the US, they seem to be able to do stuff in a timely matter and have no problems with full cutsomizing.
I've been informed that the School of Cross thing was a pass for the volunteer first aid group I'm with (not enough volunteers), so now that I have my rear wheel back for the cross bike I'll likely go check that out on Sat. AM before going to Leduc for the orientation (and shameless recruiting blitz ;) )
On the bike front, I'm rolling agains as I alluded to above. I picked up a cheap-o freehub to tide me over until Shimano decides if they'll warranty the dead one. I still have to drop the wheel back into the frame, but it looks like it is ready to roll. I'm suspecting that I will need to save some pennies and dust off my wheelbuilding skills....build up a custom set for that bike using some hubs that I know will take a beating.
That sounds great Mike. Do you tinker in bike building to? A man of many talents, a good atribute to have on a cycling team. Good luck with the first aiding and see you for that shamless team building exersise on Saturday. Dale
Okay Guys, I feel a little out of it today. Refresh my memory. Is there an RTCC orientation in Leduc on Sat we are planning to meet up at? If so I guess I better sign up.
Well, this wasn't planned... but Dale mentioned that there was an orientation at 2pm in Leduc. So, I signed up for it (haven't done one for this year and well....didn't want to pass by the opportunity to scare, pump up and recruit riders for the 2010 Ride.
It sounds like Dale and Deanna are going to be there too. ABS, if you wanted to come on down to Leduc, we could do an orientation raid / team meeting type of thing ;) Either that, or we could possibly drop by your place afterwards...
Yeah, I do some bike building...my mountain bike has been a pet project and very little remains stock on it. There are a few things I can't do yet / aren't worth getting the tools for with how often one does them (unless you are a shop) :)
I usually bring a good "field" kit with me when I ride (I also volunteer as a Bike Patroller with the IMBA, so I am usually pretty well equipped) and I can generally get things together well enough to finish a ride....that usually makes me a nice guy to ride with ;)
Wheels, though, are an art and a bit of a passion of mine. I've come to the conclusion that a good set of wheels is a good investment if you're doing some serious pedalling...and at my size, they also seem to hold up better to my *ahem* somewhat aggressive / not very graceful / dang the torpedos, full speed ahead riding style.
Anyway, seeing as my skill are not needed for the cyclocross event (though I may ride over to check it out and flash last years jersey around), I'll see you at the Orientation. I'll likely be in a shirt of some sort from the '09 Ride.
Ooooooooooooooooooooohhhh Yeah !!!! I do believe that this will be prime ground for adding bodies to our chain gang.
That wheel building skill you have, I imagine comes in awful handy some times, I like to tinker as well but I have never attempted wheels, I have a basic understanding from reading some related articles but have never had a reason or been brave enough to try it. Maybe one day.
I was wondering if you could check something for me. I'm looking at buying a road bike and have chosen what I think would be a good bike for me, not number one on any list but what I think is a good middle of the road, starter road bike. It is a Trek 2.1, the 2010 model is in stock at United Cycle and is selling for $1500, being a registered Conquer Cancer rider they offer a 10% discount, so tax in would be about $1400 buck. If you get a chance have a look and let me know what you think. Thanks
Dale

No need to look....it was one of the bikes I was considering when I was looking for the 2009 Ride. They sold the last 2009 on me about 3 days before I could pull the trigger Decent bike and good for sport use (not really a racer, but also without the racer price tag).
For the type of road riding an "average" person would do, it is certainly a decent bike. Now that Sora is 9 speed, it's that much better.
-- Edited by Psycho Mike on Thursday 24th of September 2009 02:45:52 AM
Sora is the level of the components. Shimano goes (ascending) 2200, Sora, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra then Dura Ace for road stuff. Sora are decent components....not super expensive, but good for recreational riding.
Hey, no problem just thought I was having a brainless moment again (advanced age & all ). I can't make it for 2 pm to Leduc & we got tickets for the football game at 4pm so I guess we will have to hook up later. If you all meet up & decide you want to hook up for a team meet let me know. With any luck & the sounds of it we may actually have a few more team mates to meet up with. Keep me posted & I'll talk to you later.
As far as drive line components, they have really changed it up for 2010, it's a 30 speed and almost entirely "105". I actually like last years paint better, but 2010 paint isn't bad, just dark. Dale
Dale....My appologies! I had 1.2 not 2.1 stuck in my head. The 2.1 is an even more capable road bike than the 1.2 and has better quality components. If you're game, it could probably get you into entry level racing.
A 10 speed cassette with a triple...man! That's a lot of gears ;) I guess I'll have to ride the Cx bike again next year just to keep up :)
Have fun at the game, Annettte! We'll keep you posted on developments :)
I'll likely go for a 30 km spin tomorrow...going to ride from my place over to the School of Cross event at 40 Ave and 117 Street. I told the local RCC orientation / promotion coordinator I'd drop by and the yellow and black jersey should stand out nicely :) Besides, it's an excuse to see if the new freehub will hold up ;)
Hey Mike, thanks for the little jab, but I have to tell you, I think it's a good job all those gears are there. Because I'm going to need them to have any chance of keeping up with you.
I have alot of baggage to shed before the event, and right now I'm really trying to control what enters the tank. Once I start to see some losses in that depart. Then I'll have to hit the road hard. Right now all I seem to have time for is the commute to work and it's only about 12 km's and I don't always have the fredom to do that ride everyday as sometimes I need the vehicle to deal with the children.
I certainly do believe that some distance rides would do me alot of good, I am just having trouble lately making the time to go. I know I have to do it, but how does that saying go, " I need to sleep too". I'm working on it and having the team in the mix will certainly help motivate me to put my riding at close to the top of the list if not right at the top. Still working on it, it's always on my mind these days.
I will see you tomorrow.
Dale

Hehehe...no jab intended Dale. I had been thinking I might bring the mountain bike to the ride next year, but it is geared a lot lower (great for the hills....hills and trees and dirt, oh my!) as compared to the cyclocross bike, which is basically a burlier road bike for light off-road use.
If I use my bonus (if there is such a thing this year) to build up some wheels for the cross bike, then I won't be as leery about putting it through the ride again. I'm not a small guy myself and I need to shed a few lbs too :) And I can be hard on my bikes as a result...as the dead freehub testifies of.
We'll work on it together...training, encouraging each other and so on...and we'll all be ready for the Ride come June :)
Hey Mike, Thanks for that, but I wasn't talking about weight loss......just kidding.
All my talk about controlling what goes in, I shot that all out the window last night. I have to say that last night was bad, I ate more last night than I have in the last couple months, I was bad sooooooo bad. We went to the Old Spaghetti Factory, to celebrate birthdays for my nephew and I. I feel so ill this morning, not a good plan. My wife and I used to frequent this establishment years ago and there is only one item on the menu that interests me in the least, its call Fettuccini Con Polo. Not sure how familiar you are with the spaghetti factory but this item has to be the best worst item on their menu, it consists of noodles, mushrooms, chicken and an amazing cream sauce. Very tasty, very bad for everything else. I'm paying the price for it this morning. All I can manage is a dry piece of toast and a little jam.
Hey Mike, I just wanted to say, that I was just poking about the new recrute. As long as we have him signed up, that's all that matters. I hope that you have him signed up under you, also i hope that you have his contact info, because i'm not sure how long it will take the office to process his registration but he might not show up on the web for a while.
Also I wanted to say sorry for running out on you, after the meeting. My sisters baby was not doing well and she wanted to get going. Next time we'll have to bring the bikes.
It was very nice to meet you, we should trade phone numbers so that we can get in contact more easily and quicker for arranging training rides, fundraisers etc... I will send you a private message with my info.
hehehe :) For me, it is Olive Garden and the Steak and Gargenzola fetticcini :)
No worries about having to leave....I saw the little ones getting stir-crazy and I thought you'd likely have to run. We'll get the bikes going next time.
I do have Trevor's info so we can get a hold of him :) He seems like a nice guy too and he's going to try to bring in a few co-workers....maybe even to the team. I think he came in as "inspired by self"...If I end up an ambassador, cool....if not, it doesn't matter. I just want a good sized team so we can show off these great jerseys we've got planned ;)
Annette, I hope you had fun getting blown about at the game ;) Too bad The Eskies lost :(
Thanks Mike, the game wasn't the best played , but I'm actually a Rider fan so the right team won for me!! Sounds like a new recruit on board. Woo Hoo !!
And....we may have more. I've been chatting with some folks locally who, if they don't get a work team going (they work at one of the bike shops) then they will likely join us ;)
