Thanks Mike!!! Well I did some hills yesterday, first real hills that I have done since the injury and I had an extra 50lbs on the back of my bike( bike trailer with granddaughter, water, purse, and easter stuff). My knees didn't hurt but I felt the hills! Thank goodness they were small, even if one was rather sharp. I would still prefer to skip the hills I am not really suppose to start them until May... I know cutting it close but if my knees are strong again it will just be a matter of speed and endurance by that point! So I am doing as my trainer and chiropractor say and trying real hard to behave...lol... like I said real hard... And no I don't know Edmonton.. I am a born and breed Calgarian....lol.. be nice to me guys ... don't get me lost...please... or my Edmontonian hubby might have to come and find me... lol... I am looking forward to meeting all of you! See you the 24th... Hey Mike I think we should see if Red is up to coming along? I know she has bum knees too...
Cool, I'll take out the Cyclo-X bike then instead of the TT. I'm riding to work in the mornings with the TT so I should be good. Any time on the road is good time, even if the speed isn't up where I normally cruise.
Sorry I cannot make the weekend of the 24th. Anyone for the following weekend May 1?? I will come up team meet/ride. We all probably need the road time, let me know if it works for anyone.
Hi Team, Anyone interested in joining the RTCC training rides starting at Strathcona on Saturday mornings? I just checked the participant Centre under training. I guess they already started last Saturday. I joined some riders last year and the training was great. We increased about 10% every week and some of us went Saturday and Sunday for the long distances. Anyone can come and ride. We even had some people training for the MS ride as well. There are some good hills to train on. My husband and I plan to be there this Saturday. Solange
I'm up for the ride on Apr 24 (Tammy, I promise to stay with you & not get you lost. Us ladies with bum knees got to stick together). May be available for the ride on May 1 too. Will keep checking back.
Hmmmm...this sounds like good news, but I'll need some feedback from the team about it.
One of my contacts has gotten back to me regarding outright sponsoring the jersey. He has requested a proposal and price to provide our team jerseys for us. This would mean that we may or may not get fund-raising from the sponsorship, but it would also mean that (assuming they do sponsor them) the jerseys are bought and paid for so we wouldn't have to worry about getting jerseys ourselves if we don't get other sponsors to buy in with our current idea.
He has asked for a proposal from me with prices and so I'd like to present him with the following options:
1) One jersey for every rider on the team plus a few spares (one for the ride office as they have requested and a couple for if we get some additional riders) and I'd also strongly encourage a team donation.
2) 2 jerseys per team members plus a couple spares (ride office, singles for a few new members) with the caveat that we'll wear the extra jersey while we're out and about doing training rides etc.
or
3) A fixed price for the full back of the jersey (say $5k) that allows us to be flexible with the jersey order (i.e. we get a bunch more riders joining the team) and permits a team donation for which he gets a tax receipt for 70% of the sponsorship.
The only caveat is that our supporting bike shop would still get a little space on a sleeve or on the back for their technical support and for giving us the pro/staff pricing (if anyone needs details on this, please email me....I'll fill you in with the details).
So...thoughts, opinions, alternative ideas? Let me know. I'll get a quote for the jerseys themselves so I'm set to go on that end.
I will ride the RTCC training ride on the 17th and probably some more after that when my time permits :) Should be a good one. I like the riding out there. Nice and quiet, good smooth roads.
I should be in for the ride on the 24th but it is "house selling dependant" as we are listing our house on Monday! Yay! But I need to get out and do some riding as I have not done very much at all. That being said, I am a little worried that I might get lost as well not having much training behind me. Sounds like everyone else has been pretty busy with the training. My other problem is I don't have a bike carrier yet to get my bike there. Does anyone know where I can get one?
I noticed that everyone is asking where and when we are meeting so I would like to know too!
Look forward to the details and finally meeting most of you.
Also, just a heads up: I was thinking of doing an Arbonne party May 1st. This one would be a proceeds going to fundraising party so anyone who will be available is welcome to come. Keep it in mind. It would probably be around 3pm or so that Saturday.
Jen, don't worry, I've been on my bike exactly twice so far since the 3 times I was on it last year. I'm nowhere near where I want to be with regards to conditioning. We still have some time to get sorted out for the big ride. And there will be lots of opportunities to get out there and hit the pavement.
As for a bike carrier, I would defer to Mike and our contacts with Mud, Sweat, and Gears. they might be able to produce something. Otherwise I would check out Kijiji :)
Well, we don't have anything definite on a meeting time or place. Another meeting was suggested, but that's as far as it has gone (unless someone had some thoughts while my email was down last weekend). With the weather, it's going to be tough to ride to any meeting this weekend (though I still have the cross tires on....hmmm...maybe ride up to EBC to try to finish building the new wheels....)
Jen, give Paul over a MSG a call and let him know you're on the team and what sort of thing you're after...he may be able to help you out. My wife and I were given a Canadian Tire special...it works and is an option :)
I'm getting some riding in, but not nearly as much as I'd like. I used to live almost down the block from Mill Creek Ravine so I would do a bit more riding in the evenings....now it is an 18 km round trip to get to the trails :( Oh well....with this weather, I'm at least motivated to get the cyclocross bike started toward its "new" build with the wheels, brakes and other goodies I picked up for it over the "off" season.
Thanks Matt & Mike for the comments and the ideas of where to go for a bike carrier. I have been searching Kijiji for some time but will try CT and if all else fails, BSG! Thanks for the ideas.
I have not actually been out on my bike at all yet! I took a SPIN class and that's over now and that's about it. Starting to get a little nervous with time going so fast and the ride creeping up on us - same with fundraising. Was off to a good start but funds have stagnated now so I think it's time to up the ante and start working. My Arbonne party will help some, then I plan on having a g sale as well soon, maybe a 50/50 at work here and we'll see what else.
Look forward to a place/time for the ride on the 24th.
hi team, Just to let you know that I may riding a little bit faster this year!!! I bought a Salsa Casserolle from Vancouver. Have been out only a few times since the weather has cooled down. Looking forward to riding this weekend. Anyone going to Ardrossan on Saturday morning? I have been out looking for items for our Silent Auction. It will be great fun at Shanks.. Solange
I was considering it, Solange....either that or heading for the NW part of town from Millwoods.
I think part of it depends on how much I get done on the bike in the next few days....if I can get it set-up with the new wheels and brakes then I'll be ready for some longer rides :)
Hey (again)! I am wanting to do a 50/50 draw but am not sure as to the legalities of doing one. Does one have to run it by Alberta Liquor and Gaming or can I just go ahead and do the draw?
Hey Jen, If you want a license for the 50/50 draw you just have to go to any registry & as for a form. Once you fill it out it only takes about a week to get the license. I have one from last year that my team didn't use & we should be able to still use it. I can clarify that if you like.
The weekend of May 1 I have my first baseball tournament, so won't be able to participate in any training rides or fundraising.
Can someone fill me in on what has been decided about the pub night fundraisers? I missed the meeting. Are we doing them at Metro, Schanks, Union? What was decided, & is there anything I can do to help?
Hi all, i think Mike was taking minutes of the meeting or maybe katy. anyway I'm pretty sure we decided to do Shanks and the union hall as well; do 50/50 and a Silent Auction at Shanks on the Friday night May 14th; the union hall on the Saturday night 15th. Maybe send more info through our team email.
Annette - so a registry like the same place you go to register your vehicles and then I would just say that I want to get a license to do a 50/50 draw? Thanks for the input - I didn't think one could just do a 50/50 draw.
I can't do any training this weekend as I will be out of town but I need to get on the training band wagon soon! (Ardrossan would probably be pushing it for me anyway!)
As Annette said, if anyone needs any help with anything, please let me know.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to have another team meeting with it getting closer to ride day and the major fundraising events happening? Let me know your thoughts all!
Ok, for the record, the Ardrossan rec center and Strathcona Olympiette centre are not the same place. Even though when you search for them on your phone and they come up as the same place. So don't go to the Olympiette centre if you need to be at the rec centre......
You could try search for Holy Redeemer catholic School- the Ardrossen Rec Centre is behind it. Take Baseline (101Ave) through Sherwood park. Keep going east past highway 21. The next stop sign turn left-cross the tracks-immediate right turn and there on your left is Rec Centre.
Ok Mike it is now Monday and I don't know where we are going ... I will let you know that I hurt myself but I hope to be up and running ...or riding just fine by Sat. So let me know please... Tammy Oh BTW could I get some contact info on you so when I get there I could like ...hmmm .. contact you...lol
Ok...I know it's Monday. Ungh...head cold and site visits :(
I had a route in my mind for Sat, but I also got a call from Brad...they've only got 11 people signed up for their Saturday ride at Strathcona Olympiette Centre. It was a very hopeful Brad that we'd consider joining them.
I'm thinking it may be just as easy to head out there for the leisurely 25 km ride as it would be to do the bigger ride in town. I've got a note in to Brad to see how many hills are on their route....I used to live out on the 50km route and I know the area has some hills...but if it isn't too bad, it is a pretty good option, especially as it is a 9:30 am start which would give you lots of time for the ride and to get back to the family functions, Tammy. :) Heck, if I get the Cx bike roadie-fied by then, I may even ride out :D
As for contact info templetagteam.at.shaw.ca (replace the .at. appropriately) and my cell is 780-two three three - one five seven one.
Sorry Mike... It was I that was talking to Bradley and mentioned that I was going to be in Edmonton and on Sat I was going to be doing a ride with you and some of yours... I am up doing the ride with Bradley and others as well ... would like to know about the hills of course... 403-874-0266
Sorry to crush all you slow pokes with bumb knees and the like, but I can say with a great deal of confidence that I will be bringing up the rear. My knees are okay but I suffer from a great combination of ailments. I am a Insulin dependant diabetic, who has seasonal allergies and asthma. I am also struggling with my weight for the last few years. My endurance is not anywhere near where it should be for a ride like this but I'm getting in some shorter rides to try and get going, I feel that I need some longer rides but at a very gentle pace. Right now I think that it is all about the distance and not the speed. Hopfully the speed will come later.
Right now the shorter rides that I am doing are about 10 km and it takes me about 35 minutes on a good day. By the time I reach my destination, I am done or spent or however you want to say it
Would anyone have any suggestions about a ride profile that would satisfy a need such as mine. I think that I might be okay with a couple of good hills, but not very many.
Oh yeah one other thing, for you stronger riders, the rest of us are all bringing tow hooks, so be ready.

Hey "Afew" didn't you ride last year? I know that weight thing ... believe me ... last year I lost 30lbs training.... but I hurt my knee just before the ride last year .. but rode anyway... It took me about 8 hrs to do day one... then after the ride the Dr.s took me off everything .. well I guess it was my choice .. they said do it our way or maybe never walk or ride again ... so their way it was ... no exercising ... no bike ... no stairs .. no lifting and carrying ... for 3 months and I gained every lb back... grrr.... and then I have been working out 4 to 5 times a week since January. I have managed to gain weight not lose any... I don't have diabetes .. but I do have other health issues ... and my hope is that the distance and speed will also come ... I try to ride a minimum of 30 mins 2 times a week, 1hr 2 times a week, 3 hrs once a week ... as well as I have a work out that a trainer gave me ... and I love my Wii Fit .. and the Wii fitness coach... but I tried a spin class and hurt myself .. I guess I am not any where near as fit as I thought that I was..... I am happy to say that I am almost pain free today ..from the class that was on Wed... lol... I don't know where you live .. but if you live in Calgary I would be willing to do a ride from ogden to chestermere with you... let me know Tammy
Hey Afew ( I belive it is Annette but could be wrong)
Although I do not suffer from any ailments besides sheer laziness and the need to get out and do more training, I, also am getting a slow start. I belive you are probably way above me with the 10km in 35 minutes so hope that helps keep you going! I think I did about half of that in 40 minutes the other day so that's pretty bad! But my goal is to ride one day, run the next, ride one day, run the next...and so on.
SO....if you are in Edmonton/St. Albert, I would be more than willing to do a few shorter, not so rough rides with you to help get trained. Maybe we can work something out.
Riding with brad would be fine with me-is he the one with that Oz accent? Just let me know and is it at the Olympiette centre or the Rec Centre? My road bike is in the shop getting a new back tire and gentle tune up but I have a plain no shocks bikes with smoother tires I will use! I'm just getting my oldest to put my wonen's seat back on it.
Yes, I will be at the Olympiette Centre on Saturday morning. It is a Conquer Cancer training ride. I talked to Brad today and we need to RSVP on the Conquer site so they have an idea of how many people could show up. Brad said they have a 25 km and a a 50 km route planned out. I may be going a little further, see how I feel. Katy it is not the Ardrossan Centre this time, but the Olympiette. See you there. solange
Thanks to All for your encouraging words! I am going to try and make it out to the ride on Sat. Thanks for the note about RSVPing. I'll see you there.
Oh and Katy, it's "spokes" not "strokes" Ha Ha very funny
Jen, I do live in St. Albert, we are in Forest Lawn, so maybe send me an email on a day that your thinking of getting out and if I can make it on that day, I'll let you know and visa versa I'll do the same. Thanks
OK I'm in then. I'll RSVP! Corrie-for directions-earlier on this thread Stu. posted a link for directions to the Place- (Map) Stu is Sir Loin It is east and south of Sherwood Park. Katy
I'm RSVPing too. I've got the Cx bike in pieces on my repair stand right now....getting it all upgraded and "roadie-fied" so I'm good to go on Sat. Hopefully I can get in a couple "shakedown" rides to see if there are any issues and get them corrected before I show up.
Just wondering if anyone knows about riding in the rain or snow? Will the training ride go ahead if it is raining Saturday morning? I'm not sure that I'm equiped yet for that kind of outing. Any advise would be great! Thank you!
My appologies for taking off like that, I was a little tenuouse about the bike. first time out and I wanted to push it, for the bike and the body for sure. I survived the 25 k and maybe next time i'll try the 50 at a more reasonable pace. the bike did well, I'm giving it the green light, the body, not so sure about, we'll see next time if i can survive the 50 k.
Besides it being cold and windy it was a good day. It was nice to see everyone who could make it out.
Hi all, Yes it was a good ride today and to meet some team members and Brad and friends from Calgary. I did the 50 km, a bit slow but I had not been out all week. Jill from the RTCC said we could possibly post some of our fundraising events on Facebook. I don't do facebook or Gujiji but Mike, as our captain, maybe you could look into that. Also she said we should be able to print off some team posters from the RTCC site as well to put up at Schanks. Solange
And Solange was slow 'cause she waited for me! 50k felt a bit long and slow (as well as chillier than I like) but hey I did it! Now to work up to longer rides!
Hey Team, Sorry I had to bail on the training ride on Saturday. Some idiot at work deleted me from the computer system , which resulted in me losing everything I had prepped to teach (the entire program). As such, I have been working long hours trying to prep enough to teach this & next week (or at least enough to keep me going until the can retrieve my data) .
Anyway, I am still up for helping at the Compost sale on May 8 Katy, and can work at the pub nights on May 14 & 15. I contacted registries again and found out that the license I have is not valid as the team name & members are different from my team last year. I have applied for new licenses for both 50/50 draws, so you don't need to worry about that Jen. In my infinite brain farts I have deleted the emails with the info for the pub nights. Could you please send me the info again (e.g. times, locations, & addresses)? Thanks all.
Hey guys it was great to finally get to put a face to some of the names here! Saturdays ride was ... cold ... bumpy ... and I had a blast! I also had a flat tire when I loaded my bike ...lol.. thems the breaks ... atleast I didn't have a flat on the road! So I am really not whinning here!... Mike I am still thinking!!! Lisa and Andrea if you find this thread it was great to meet and ride with you both I look forward to another opportunity! Tammy
Hello everyone - I have a feeling that I have been left out of the loop on planning and training ride information but on my own part as my email address listed on our team site has been down for quite some time now.
I am NO LONGER using happyroc@telus.net
Instead, please email me at j.frizell@live.com
It just seems like you all know a lot more about what's going on than I do! I don't know if that is my fault for not keeping up with the site or for not letting you all know that I don't have access to my happyroc account. (?) Hopefully that will be fixed now :)
Dale - that is wonderful news to hear that you live in St. Albert. What my schedule is right now is that I run one night, ride the next and so on. Tonight I rode and I just take most of the trail system from big lake all the way to River Lot 56. It's a good 20Kms or so for one trip around. I just started doing this active training so unfortunately it is taking me about an hour to do it. But I will persevere! SO....my next ride day will be Wednesday around 7'ish if you want to come. Or I can switch it up a bit too so that we can manage to get together.
So, if we get a license for 50/50 draws, we get one on behalf of the team and then any member can use it? Is that how it works? Please let me know when you get it then as I would like to get started on that.
My Arbonne fundraiser is a tanker - no one wants to come :) and if any of you said you would come, then you probably replied to my happyroc account which I have no access to!
PLEASE, IF SOMEONE COULD EMAIL ME AT j.frizell@live.com ANY UPCOMING FUNDRAISING THAT IS GOING ON WHICH YOU NEED HELP WITH I WOULD APPRECIATE IT! Then I will feel a little more back in the loop.
I will make it out one of these times...got my bike carrier...getting used to my bike....it's all going pretty good.
Hey Jen, I got approval for the raffle license today so will go pick up the permits tomorrow. They are in the name of Cancer Crusaders, so anyone on the team can use them. The pub night at Union Hall is May 14 and Schancks on May 15 as far as I know. I got some info from Solange & Stuart, so you can try emailing them on the details. I live close to St Albert (St Albert trail & 137 Ave) so am close enough to do some training rides together if you like. I prefer the river valley (some decent hills there) as it helped build my stamina last year. Let me know if you are interested.
K Mike I took the plunge and bought a new bike... it is on lay away till pay day ... omg... I thought that not being able to do some of the things I did as a kid on a bike was just me.... but oh my ... I did a test ride on this bike and there is barely any pressure on my hands and I can let go of the handle bars ... I can stand on the bike... and hills ... it eats them ... I think that the name is surius... I am not so sure of the spelling ... black with white lettering ... $1100.00 ... On another issue I would like to join your team but I don't feel like I would be bringing anything to the team ... and considering that I am having difficulty with my fundraising so I feel that I would be a burden to the team ... so talk about it and let me know what you think!
Yes, very nice to have another team member in St. Albert. Sorry that I missed out tonight, but I have to admit that I would likely have passed on tonight as I'm kindof a fair weather rider. Hopefully we can hook up for some rides before the big day/s.
