lol... I know this is no laughing matter...I understand where you are coming from! I am not so sure where you live ... Calgary or Edmonton... but if it is Calgary, there are some great training rides put on by Nigel Brockton ... Here's the URL ... http://r2cc.wikispaces.com/Tuesday+Rides these rides are Tuesday and Saturday ... hope to see you there Saturday....
I was in a car accident and I am still having some major problems with my back, but about a week ago I got my DR. and Chiro to agree to let me return to light training ... so fingers crossed and new goals set. I am up to 8.24K with out pain...
Best of Luck!!! Remember it is not a race it is a ride to show our commitment and endurance! It's easier to ride then to fight cancer... or so I have been told!
we have barely trained at all. its hard when you work 12 hours a day on a 24 day shift. And we all party pretty hard so were going to be in the back probably dying. but well battle through it.
No...you're not dead (I'm assuming you still have a pulse ;) )
The Ride will be a challenge..but Tammy is right...this isn't a race, it's a ride. I'd suggest trying to moderately increase what you can do over the next couple weeks....overtraining for two weeks will lead to some brutal results for the Ride, just like not training at all. If you can get a 50km ride in next weekend and can still post replies next week, I think you'll survive pretty well....you'll be tired, very tired, at the end of each day, but you'll make it through. :)
The most I rode prior to last year's RTCC was 50k along the pathways of Calgary - on a mountain bike - after not riding a bike for about 5 years. I did a little training at they gym prior to, and a few small 10k rides in the weeks prior to so I was nowhere near prepared compared to my team full of tri-athletes and marathon runners The ride was indeed challenging last year but it's totally do-able. I think by the time I got to the really hilly part last year it was more a mental game than a physical game. Just remind yourself that you CAN do it, and keep an eye on those yellow flags - somehow they magically pull you up the hill. And, try to get to know your bike. Turns out my brakes were rubbing through a good portion of Day 1 and didn't figure it out until the final check-stop before camp. I guess I was looking for a little extra challenge on the hills See you Saturday - I'll be the one on a bike and wearing a yellow jersey
As long as you keep in mind it is NOT A RACE and your bike is in decent shape (i.e. no rubbing brakes ;) ) then you should be fine...
It may take you a while, but the event staff realize that most folks are not Lance Armstrong (I don't know if that's the best example to use with all the doping rumours swirling...but you know what I mean) and that slow and steady gets done the course. :)
My bike is another bit of a worry for me hahahahah....it's an old beater roadie that I picked up. Hopefully she stands up to the abuse on Sat/Sun, along with my knees ;)
See you all out there!!!!!! Looking forward to it....
I'll be out there on the road with all yall this weekend. My cousin and I just did the BC Ride to Conquer cancer this past weekend and similar to what Psycho Mike said there are all sorts of bikes from your $10 000 road bike to one gentleman who did the entire ride on a Unicycle. I echo what Psycho Mike said in that it's definitely NOT a race it's a ride. Take as much time as you need at all of the rest stops and lunch. Enjoy the experience!
You will do just fine. I remember a guy last year doing the ride on an old 1 speed Monkey Bike. Most of us have had a hard time training this year due to Mother Nature's relentless moody changes. My moto last year was "I think I can" like the train in Dumbo, but mostly it was in memory of my loved ones who passed away from cancer, what they endured made my bodily aches seem small. Think of it as a Sunday ride on your bike with pit stops are placed nearly every 20 km. And if you stop to walk a bit, that's okay, because you will meet so many other great people like you, who are doing it for a great cause.
See you Saturday, rain or shine, with us other yellow jerseys. :)
Well there is nothing I can add to all that ... but if I can do it any one can! This year I have my goal set at 50K a day! With my recent injury this is more then the docs said I would be able to do! I drove my RV out to Chain Lakes and the memories of the previous years ride left me wondering...which of the 100+K am I going to do and which of the 100+K per day am I not going to do? As I was driving along I remember different people I had spoke to and different memories of the ones I loved and lost! I don't want to give up 1K of that to a sweeper vechile! Well Dump hill and Longview hill excluded in that last statement!!! lol...
I will see everyone Sat morning ... god grant me the strength!
