From my experience, you go in and talk to them...have a good idea for what you want to do (I.e. a BBQ out front), tell them what it is for and go from thereo. ;)

We just had one at a local grocery store here in Strathmore. All you need to do is talk to the store manager, and set up a date. Most are very open to the idea, especially if you try to get support from your local paper as well. It helped that the Franchise owner of the store we fundraiser at, was a close friend, but I'm sure the process would be the same if you didn't know them personally. We set up our trainers and rode for 2.5 hours, talking to customers as they shopped. At the same time we set up a display table with the ride orientation video running on a laptop, a fundraising progress sign, donation bucket (of course), and some RTCC jerseys for from last year's ride for visual effect. In the 2.5 hours, we raised over $300 for our team. If any of us wanted to take a break, we got off, picked up a helmet for collecting donations, and started talking to people personally. My wife also worked at the display table. The Ride Office was super helpful, and they even supplied us with some Dri-fit Tshirts to wear, so we looked like a team (our Team Jerseys are on order).
